Sweetbay Doula

About

My name is Darby Morris and I am the owner of Sweetbay Doula, named after the wonderful strength of Sweetbay trees. Since May 2017, I have both served private clients and volunteered at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) and St. Luke’s Hospital as a birth and postpartum doula.

I fell in love with birth in 2008 when I witnessed the birth of my close friend’s first child. My friend, a nurse, saw my passion for birth and encouraged me to consider becoming a doula. I took classes in breastfeeding and childbirth education, and took Doulas of North America’s (DONA) birth and postpartum doula workshops. In 2017, I finally took on my first client and began serving the bay area. Since then I have continued my education by taking classes in Spinning Babies, pelvic floor therapy, and workshops from DONA and Phyllis Klaus.

My background as an anthropologist serves me well in my new profession as a doula. As a cultural anthropologist I also speak Spanish and Mandarin. I strongly believe culture has a profound impact on the birthing individual and am passionate about finding ways to work with this bond.

I believe it is the doula’s job to ensure that each client has the most positive birth they can, given their circumstances. To help my clients choose the best birth plan for them, I keep abreast of birth research and provide my clients with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. I value continuing education, and I plan to become a “full spectrum” doula and childbirth educator. I believe everyone has the right to a beautiful birth and wish to serve all people, including birthing individuals over 40, those with disabilities, as well as adopting and LGBT families. Whether you are planning to give birth at home, at a birth center or in a hospital, I will be there to support you.

I serve families in San Francisco and the upper Peninsula area (south of the city to Mountain View).
